Andrew Schloss - sonicpair #1

Andrew Schloss, composer, radiodrum Joanna Hood, viola Human+Robot Music Friday January 21 2011 Djavad Mowafaghian World Art Studio SFU Woodwards Vancouver The first in a series of acoustic/electroacoustic/robotic duos involving improvisation, this piece is intended to serve as a "sonic toothbrush." The piece combines various autonomous multi-armed robotic instruments with the radiodrum, a virtual instrument that tracks musical gestures in three dimensions, and can be thought of as a percussion instrument, while also as an abstract 3D gesture sensor. In this piece, the radiodrum sends commands to the actuators, while at the same time modifying via signal processing the live acoustic sound that is produced. This allows the performers to both activate the robot and manipulate the sound of the instruments in real time as if they were "sonic taffy" --hence the need for the toothbrush.
